Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The Rosamond Gifford Zoo announced Thursday the winning names for its new baby snow leopards.

The babies will be named Bajen and Ramil.

Bajen is a Russian boy’s name that means "long awaited." Zoo personnel say it's a fitting name because it’s been 14 years since snow leopards were born at the zoo.

The other snow leopard will be called Ramil, a name from Uzbekistan, where snow leopards live.

563 pairs of names submitted in the contest. Bajen and Ramil received more than 36 percent of the votes among the final five entries.

The two male snow leopards were born on June 14 to parents Zena and Senge.

The winning names were sent in by Julianna Buchmann, of Weedsport, who came up with Bajen, and Karen Dunford, of Nedrow, who submitted Ramil.
