UTICA, N.Y. (AP) - A 20-year-old woman charged with smothering her infant daughter in April 2008 pleaded not guilty in a New York court after being returned from North Carolina on a fugitive warrant.
LeeAnn Wimmers was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge late Thursday afternoon in Oneida County. The name of her lawyer was not immediately available.
She's accused of killing four-month-old Daniella Sapienza. Police say Wimmers smothered the baby to stop her from crying.
Wimmers was living just north of Utica in Deerfield at the time of the baby's death, which she claims was the result of a sleeping disorder.
Wimmers moved to Asheville, N.C., in December. She waived her right to an extradition hearing.
Wimmers is due back in court on July 10th.
