CHILI, N.Y. (AP) - Firefighters and police alerted by a passing postal worker have rescued two women and two children from a burning home in western New York.

Authorities tell local media outlets that letter carrier Barbara Langdon dialed 911 after seeing smoke and hearing glass breaking at the home in Chili, a Rochester suburb, at about 10 a.m. Thursday. She then helped one of the women out through a window as Monroe County deputies and firefighters arrived and searched the house for the others.

The women - 68 and 24 years old - and a 4-year-old boy and 7-month-old girl were taken to a Rochester hospital, where the children remained in critical condition Thursday evening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
