(WHAM-TV) Connecticut - Classes start Thursday morning, January 3, for the children of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

The survivors of last month's shooting will start over in a new school transformed by a neighboring community.

The hope is that today will be as normal as possible for the students.

Great care was taken to ensure that those students will find everything just as they left it… right down to the pencils on their desks.

Students will attend class in a newly named building, originally designed as a middle school, but which was modified for Sandy Hook students. The sinks and toilets were lowered and the gym was remodeled.

The sign outside the former Chalk Hill Middle School has been changed to “Sandy Hook Elementary School.”

"When you return to familiarity, in a situation that feels really comfortable, that will help restore your previous beliefs, restore that world view that might have gotten shaken up by the trauma," said Clinical Psychologist Dr. Jamie Howard.

To help restore that belief, Sandy Hook's former principal who retired two years ago, is returning to the school. Parents will be allowed into the School and into classrooms with their children.
