Rochester, N.Y. - As we head into the weekend with higher temperatures and warmer air, we'll see thawing on lakes and ponds.

Emergency responders are ready in case anyone falls through the ice.

Local fire departments trained for cold water rescues with the coast guard this week.

Their advice is to err on the side of caution and stay away from thin ice.

Ice is not safe where there is water on the ice, or where there are cracks in the ice.

If you fall through, don't panic. And don’t thrash and struggle—instead, call for help.

The next thing to do is reach out and break away the weak ice in front of you. Then grab up on the ice as far as you can, and kick your feet behind you so your body becomes horizontal. Then pull yourself onto the ice while kicking your feet.

Stay flat on the ice, and roll to safety. Although you might feel OK, go to the hospital anyway, as you could be hypothermic.
