SOMERSET, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say six children and two counselors from a western New York summer camp had to be rescued from Lake Ontario after their kayaks overturned in rough water.
Emergency officials tell The Buffalo News (http://bit.ly/MUf6yg ) that six campers and two adults from Camp Kenan were in three kayaks Monday afternoon when the boats capsized off the shore of the Niagara Count town of Barker, 35 miles northeast of Buffalo.
Lakeshore residents saw the group in distress and called the sheriff's office. A fire department crew rescued most of the kayakers, while others swam to shore.
All were checked out by emergency crews and taken back to the camp.
Officials say the water temperature had recently dipped from 72 degrees to 49 degrees after colder water rose to the surface.
