(CNN) - The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a safety alert regarding the prepackaged coffee filters many airlines use.

The FAA reports several cases of crew members and passengers suffering burns from exploding hot coffee filters. Officials say if a filter is not placed in the coffee pot just right, pressure can build in the container and cause its contents to erupt.

The agency is encouraging air carriers to add the danger to training manuals.
