PITTSBURGH (AP) - Finally, No. 14 Pittsburgh can look ahead to Notre Dame, West Virginia and Cincinnati. Even if it seemed thePanthers were already doing exactly that during most of the first half against Syracuse.

Greg Williams' 51-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime got slow-starting Pittsburgh going, and the Panthers extended their best start to a season since 1982 by beating Syracuse 37-10 on Saturday.

Dion Lewis ran for 110 yards and a touchdown for the freshman's sixth 100-yard game, tight end Dorin Dickerson caught his 10th touchdown pass this season and the Panthers (8-1, 5-0 in Big East)won their fifth in a row heading into next Saturday's game against No. 19 Notre Dame.

"It is a big game. We've got to have a good week of practice, bring our `A' game and we can't start off slowly like we didtoday," Lewis said. "We've got to keep coming." Bill Stull was 16 of 23 for 225 yards and no interceptions asthe Panthers, who last were 8-1 in Dan Marino's senior season 27 years ago, set themselves up for a possible Big East title-decidinggame against No. 4 Cincinnati on Dec. 5.

If the Bearcats beat Connecticut on Saturday night and West Virginia on Friday, the Cincinnati-Pitt game will determine the conference's BCS bowl participant regardless of the Pitt-West Virginia result on Nov. 27.

"Now we've got three tough games and we'll take them one byone," defensive lineman Gus Mustakas said. Pitt played much of the first half as if it couldn't wait to begin its difficult closing stretch, leading 6-3 until Williams intercepted a pass by Greg Paulus that was tipped by Jabaal Sheard for his third career touchdown with 1:20 left in the half. Pittoutscored Syracuse 24-7 after that.

"I think we did a good job of keeping our feet on the ground, knowing the importance of this conference game putting us 5-0,coming out and not taking nothing for granted," coach DaveWannstedt said. "We got it going in the second half."

Lewis, lightly recruited in prep school last season but fourthnationally in rushing with 1,139 yards, finished off a 55-yard drive by scoring from the 1 early in the third quarter to make it 20-3. His 78 points on 13 touchdowns tie Tony Dorsett (1973) forthe second most by a Pitt freshman, trailing only LeSean McCoy's 90points two seasons ago.

"My teammates and coaches expect me to make big plays and that's what I'm out there doing," said Lewis, who has surpassed former Big East backs such as Steve Slaton, Ray Rice, Amos Zereoueand Kevin Jones in freshman-season rushing.

Paulus to Williams normally is a productive combination for Syracuse (3-6, 0-4), which lost its 29th in its last 32 Big East games. But the Orange clearly missed leading receiver Mike Williams, who quit the team on Monday after averaging 106.6 yards receiving per game.

Neither Paulus (12 of 18, 120 yards, 2 interceptions) nor backup Ryan Nassib (5 of 16, 21 yards, 1 interception) did much as Delone Carter's 143 yards rushing represented most of Syracuse's offense. The Orange came into the game ranked 106th in offense.

"We didn't execute, we didn't score and that's disappointing,"Carter said. Syracuse not only played without Williams and three suspended players - running back Antwon Bailey, defensive end Torrey Ball andguard Andrew Tiller - but tight end Cody Catalina (knee) and safety Max Suter (arm) didn't return after being injured in the firsthalf.

"We only traveled with 55 players," coach Doug Marrone said. "Some of those injuries forced us to come out of our packages. That obviously limited us on both sides of the ball."

Pitt won its fifth in a row and seventh in eight games in the series. Syracuse has lost its last nine to ranked opponents. The Panthers led 481-285 in yardage and have a 967-497 edgewhile winning their last two games by a combined 78-24, beating South Florida 41-14 on Oct. 24. Pitt ran for 247 yards against aSyracuse defense that came in allowing an average of 88.9.

The Panthers also had six sacks, giving them 39 for the season. Dickerson, who had two career TD catches coming into his seniorseason, leads all major college tight ends with his 10 touchdowns -the most by any Pitt receiver since Greg Lee had 10 in 2004.

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Le Moyne College is still abuzz about Tuesday night’s win over the Syracuse University Men's Basketball team. It's been described by students and sports analysts alike as a David versus Goliath scenario, and one that's boosted morale at the small school.

The game ended after Le Moyne’s Christopher Johnson hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game. That put Le Moyne up by 2 with only seconds remaining, and not enough time for SU to score.

As an exhibition game, it won’t count in either team’s standings, but the significance is still clear to students and staff at both colleges. SU Senior Dan Rosenbaum was at the game, and still can't believe the final outcome. “We have 35 hundred students, they have 15 thousand. It’s an awesome accomplishment,” he said.

Le Moyne College has a rich athletic tradition, but it’s also a Catholic Jesuit school, which brings up the question: was a higher power at work?

Le Moyne president Dr. Fred Pestello, who was at the game, says probably not. “We'd like to think the higher power is involved in more significant ways than the outcome of sporting events. But we do have faith, and that helps us in everything we do.”

And while Dr. Pestello says it was a great moment in Le Moyne College history, it does take a back seat, to last year’s 50-million dollar gift to the school. Together he hopes the two moments will go a long way in putting Le Moyne, on the map.

In addition to a large number of calls to the Le Moyne college athletic department from well-wishers and alumni, Tuesday’s win also increased page hits on the college's website by nearly 500%.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Christopher Johnson and Laurence Ekperigin hooted and hollered as they skipped off Jim Boeheim Court, huge smiles creasing their faces and seemingly as stunned as the Syracuse Orange at what had just transpired.

Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining, and Division II Le Moyne stunned Syracuse 82-79 in an exhibition game Tuesday night.

"We've got an experienced group," Le Moyne head coach Steve Evans said. "Did we ever think that a day like this would happen? Probably not. But we put together a game plan. We didn't want to play Syracuse's way. We wanted to play our way. It was just one of those days for Le Moyne basketball. The kids will remember this forever."

Wes Johnson, who led Syracuse with 34 points, hit a 3 from the left corner to put Syracuse ahead 79-78 with 22 seconds left. Then Christopher Johnson responded with his sixth 3-pointer of the game, which came from the left side after Syracuse's Kris Joseph backed off defensively.

"We were sort of out of whack a little bit," Christopher Johnson said. "Everyone was rushing. But as soon as I caught the ball, I saw an opening and I just let it fly. Luckily, it went in."

After Wes Johnson missed a 3, Can Ozkaner added a free throw with 1.3 seconds left for Le Moyne and Syracuse had its first preseason exhibition loss since a setback against the Harlem Globetrotters six years ago.

"Le Moyne really outplayed us from the beginning of the game to the end," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "They (the Orange) are very, very young mentally. They really have got to grow up. We couldn't stop them on the dribble. That's something we've been looking at in practice."

Ekperigin had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Damani Corbin had 11 points and five assists, and Kevin Roth added 10 points for Le Moyne, which outscored Syracuse 42-30 in the paint. Andy Rautins had 13 points and Rick Jackson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Orange, who led 47-37 early in the second half. But the Dolphins, who play across town, never let down.

Three 3s by Christopher Johnson helped narrow the gap and a three-point play by Ekperigin gave Le Moyne a 56-55 lead with 8:41 remaining. The Dolphins, who repeatedly took advantage of Syracuse's man-to-man defense with drives and back-door cuts, went up 76-71 after Ekperigin converted a lob from Corbin with 57.9 seconds left and held on.

"It's very disappointing," said Wes Johnson, in his first season after transferring from Iowa State. "Hopefully, we can learn from this and move in the right direction."

"It's just embarrassing the way we played," said Rautins, born and raised in Syracuse. "It's embarrassing to ourselves and our fans. It wasn't luck that they won. They came out and beat us fair and square."

Evans said he wasn't really looking forward to reading and watching the news on Wednesday. "I feel bad that the story tomorrow will be, 'What's wrong with Syracuse basketball?' I don't think there's anything wrong," he said. "They've got tremendous players. It's an exhibition game. They're young. They're going to be terrific."

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse University announced Tuesday that three football players have been suspended for Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh.
