NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair and a woman were found shot to death Saturday inside a residence in Nashville, police said.

Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron confirmed that authorities were called to a condominium and found McNair and a woman shot to death inside. Aaron said police don't yet know the circumstances of the shootings.

"I don't have any answers for you now as to what's happened, who's responsible," Aaron said.

Aaron said police tentatively have identified the woman but did not release her name.

"There are persons who were around the complex today, visitors, who have been taken to headquarters for questioning, just to see what they know, what they may have seen," Aaron said. "No one is in custody right now."

The condominium where the bodies were found is one that McNair was known to frequent, but police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford could not say whether he was the owner.

Detectives from the police department's centralized homicide unit were on the scene.

McNair played 13 seasons in the NFL and led the Titans within a yard of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl, which they lost 23-16 to the St. Louis Rams. He also played for the Baltimore Ravens before retiring in April 2008.

"We don't know the details, but it is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to the families involved," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Titans owner Bud Adams said in a statement. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."

About 50 people crowded just beyond police tape outside the complex in the upscale Rutledge Hill neighborhood, some wearing Titans hats. The condominium is located within walking distance of an area filled with restaurants and nightspots, just a few blocks from the Cumberland River and within view of the Titans' stadium.

McNair began his career in 1995 with the Houston Oilers, who eventually became the Titans, and finished with 31,304 yards passing and 174 touchdowns. McNair played with pain for several years, and the injuries ultimately forced him to retire.

The highlight of his playing time might have been a five-game stretch at the end of the 2002 season when he was so banged up he couldn't practice. McNair started all five games and won them all, leading the Titans to an 11-5 finish and a berth in the AFC championship game for the second time in four seasons.

McNair played all 16 games in 2006, his first season in Baltimore, and guided the Ravens to a 13-3 record. But he injured his groin during the season opener last season and never regained the form that enabled him to earn a berth in four Pro Bowls.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of today's tragic news regarding the death of Steve McNair. He was a player who I admired a great deal," said New England Patriots senior football adviser Floyd Reese, who was GM of the Titans when McNair played there. "He was a tremendous leader and an absolute warrior. He felt like it was his responsibility to lead by working hard every day, no matter what.

"I don't think there was a player who played with him or against him that didn't look up to him and respect him," Reese said. "My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, his friends and the many teammates who loved and admired him."

Titans coach Jeff Fisher was out of the country, taking part in the first NFL-USO coaches tour to Iraq.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - A year ago, Ryan Hunter-Reay left Watkins Glen International brimming with confidence after a surprising IndyCar victory.

He returns to defend his title Sunday in the Camping World Grand Prix, sometimes having to glance down at his racing suit just to make sure he knows who he's driving for.

And it's not Rahal Letterman Racing, the team he was with in his first and only IndyCar victory.

"We had a great thing going there at Rahal Letterman," Hunter-Reay said. "Definitely, momentum was building through the season and the end of the season with a third place at Surfers Paradise. We had every sign that things would continue."

Every sign vanished after the season. RLR lost its primary sponsor when an American ethanol company decided to pull out of the open-wheel series. The team had to search for sponsorship in one of the nation's deepest recessions ever, and when the money didn't come through Hunter-Reay was out of a ride.

"To have everything going for you and then have it all fall out from under you, yeah, that's pretty hard," the Texas-born Hunter-Reay said. "But there are two sides to every coin. I'm very persistent, and no matter where I end up going I end up, hopefully, making the best of it."

A ride with Vision Racing surfaced right before the season opener in April.

"I didn't sign my deal until Friday practice at St. Petersburg," he said. "We had a great week at St. Pete, finished second. But the team's been in a bad financial situation to run two cars."

So bad that Hunter-Reay is driving the No. 14 for A.J. Foyt for the remainder of the season in place of Vitor Meira, who's recovering from a back injury sustained in the Indianapolis 500.

"I've been wearing three different race suits, so it's definitely been all over the place," Hunter-Reay said. "I'm still working with everybody at Vision trying to get the chemistry going together there and now I'm starting from scratch again. It's definitely going to take some time. That said. That doesn't mean it will stand in the way of good race results."

It hasn't before. Racing for several Champ Car teams, he won a race in Australia as a rookie in 2003 and added an impressive wire-to-wire victory for another team the next year at Milwaukee. However, by the middle of 2005 - with yet another team - he again was looking for work.

Hunter-Reay's best finish in his short IndyCar career came at the 3.4-mile track in upstate New York's Finger Lakes wine country. He passed Darren Manning, now his teammate, with less than 10 laps remaining after Scott Dixon made an uncharacteristic mistake while running second on a restart late in the race that cost him in his bid for a fourth straight victory at the historic road course.

"I've been looking forward to Watkins Glen since I left Watkins Glen last year," said Hunter-Reay, who began racing go-karts in the 1990s and also has driven in the Barber Dodge Pro Series and Toyota Atlantic Series.

"It's such a tough race track. Unfortunately, quite a few of the teams have come to test, the big teams, so it's going to be tough to go there with no testing and to be on par with those guys. But hey, we did it last year."

After a stretch of six consecutive oval races, the IndyCar Series transitions to Watkins Glen, the first of three consecutive road and street course events.

Dixon, the defending IRL champion, has been the master of the high-speed turns at The Glen and is fresh from a win at Richmond, his series-best third of the season. He trails Target Chip Ganassi teammate Dario Franchitti by one point in the standings and is itching to make up for last year's blunder.

"It was definitely one we threw away," Dixon said Friday before taking off on a different kind of ride aboard Fat Alpert Airlines, the four-engine, propeller-driven C-130T cargo plane the Blue Angels use in their air shows.

"To be going for a record of four in a row (at Watkins Glen), it was extremely frustrating to let it slip by. It ranks right up there along with the constant reminder from (team owner) Chip (Ganassi)."

Mainly because of Dixon's dominance, AGR hasn't had that breakthrough victory at Watkins Glen. So it was no surprise when Marco Andretti and teammates Danica Patrick and Tony Kanaan tested at the track three weeks ago.

"It just seems like it's one of the tracks where we've been very competitive but have never won here," said Kanaan, who was third a year ago and fourth in 2007. "It's something in our setup and the way we run our cars. We can't figure it out."

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) - Tiger Woods is helping out longtime friend Notah Begay III, agreeing to play in his charity Skins Game at Turning Stone Resort next month to support Native American youth.

Begay declined to comment and kept his head down when asked if Woods was playing in his event, then stopped 20 yards later and said with a smile, "I need to win some skins."

Woods' agent at IMG confirmed he would be playing Aug. 24 in the Notah Begay III Foundation Challenge. The world's No. 1 player will join Stanford teammate Begay, former Masters champion Mike Weir and Camilo Villegas.

A year ago, the event raised $180,000 for Begay's foundation, which supports youth sports and wellness programs for Native Americans in New Mexico and other states.

Begay, a Navajo, is the only Native American on the PGA Tour. He has four PGA Tour victories, none since 2000, and earned his card for this year by returning to Q-school.

He and Woods have remained closed, however, and Begay received an exemption to the AT&T National, where he opened with rounds of 70-72 at Congressional.

Woods had planned to play in Begay's event a year ago until he was forced to miss the second half of the season with knee surgery.

Turning Stone Resort in upstate New York has held a Fall Series event on the PGA Tour the last two years, and its $6 million purse is larger than some regular-season events.

Woods is not expected to play in the PGA Tour event, as it follows the conclusion of the FedEx Cup. Begay's charity event is the Monday of The Barclays in New Jersey, the start of the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedEx Cup. Woods has never played The Barclays since it became part of the playoffs.

Mark Steinberg, his agent at IMG, said Woods has not decided on his schedule for the playoffs.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Hurricanes are keeping Oswego native Erik Cole, agreeing Wednesday to a two-year deal with the physical forward.

Cole will make $2.8 million this upcoming season and $3 million in 2010-11.

The Hurricanes' third-round pick in 1998 took a pay cut to stay in Raleigh. He made $4 million last season while completing a three-year deal he signed in 2006.

Carolina dealt Cole to Edmonton last summer, then reacquired the fan favorite at the trade deadline. His return re-energized the Hurricanes - and All-Star Eric Staal in particular - down the stretch, with points in 15 of the final 17 games in the regular season. He struggled in the playoffs with no goals and five assists in 18 games.

Cole had 18 goals and 24 assists in 80 regular-season games.

"Erik clearly had an instant impact on our team when he returned to Carolina," general manager Jim Rutherford said. "He has been an important piece for our franchise for a long time, and we are pleased that he has decided to remain at home in Raleigh."

Cole became the second of Carolina's potential free agents to re-sign this week. Playoff hero Jussi Jokinen previously signed on for two more years.

Also Wednesday, the Hurricanes signed restricted free agent forwards Patrick Dwyer and Michael Ryan to two-way contracts.

Dwyer's two-year contract will pay him $500,000 per season at the NHL level and $105,000 at the AHL level. Ryan's one-year contract will pay him $500,000 in the NHL level and $100,000 in the AHL, with $150,000 guaranteed.

Cortland (WSYR-TV) - Cortland is kicking into high gear as it prepares to host the Jets training camp in only a few weeks.

Among the initiatives underway is filming for commercials that promote the team's arrival.

We visited the set Wednesday, where central New Yorkers are sharing the spotlight.

The concept of the commercial is to recruit a handful of Jets -- actors, really -- and stick them smack dab in the middle of central New York.

“We're going to put them into a ‘slice of life’ upstate New York scene. We have a Jet crossing guard, one tending a corn stand, one fishing,” says the commercial’s executive producer, Jeff Johnston.

Clay's Chuck Rogers auditioned for the part of the Jets crossing guard because he's a fan -- a big fan -- of the game.

“I played with the Syracuse Express, the Vipers, then I had a shot at playing with the Chargers -- I was there for six months pre-season,” Rogers says.

Two minor challenges in bringing the Jets to Cortland -- at least as far as this commercial is concerned -- first: you never know what the weather will bring, and second, turning 100 central New Yorkers into Jets and Jets fans.

Johnston says he’s “not [looking for] professional talent, but people that are very motivated to be out here to help support the Jets coming into Cortland this year.”

Hopefully these 15 minutes of fame will be enough to get neighbors off their couches and out to the Jets training camp.

These commercials will hit the air from Watertown to Binghamton and Auburn to Utica in about a week and a half.

Jets training camp begins July 31.

Cortland (WSYR-TV) - Jets fever is catching down Interstate 81 as the City of Cortland gets ready to host the team's training camp in just a few weeks.

Could you spend eight hours a day manicuring your lawn?

New York Jets groundskeeper Matt Henn doesn't mind one bit.

“I'm loving it so far. It was a good challenge for us to come up and help Cortland to get a good field for hopefully years to come,” he says.

Henn has been helping to whip this field into shape for the last several weeks. The priority right now is to create the perfect grass field to practice on because turf can be a little tough.

“You don't want anybody to trip or fall or cause any injuries. You want the best playability. If you've got good healthy grass it's stable enough for the players to run their routes. It's basically safety for the players,” says Henn.

Cortland County Chamber of Commerce director Garry VanGorder says it's important the Jets have a good experience training in Cortland this summer.

“If we don't do the job the right way they won't come back. So, we need to make sure they do come back,” he says.

The City of Cortland would sure hate to say goodbye to the estimated $5 million impact the team is expected to have on the community this summer.

Jets training camp will be held on the SUNY Cortland campus and it runs from July 31 to August 21.

NEW YORK (AP) - Mariano Rivera earned his 500th save, becoming the second reliever to reach the milestone, and the New York Yankees beat the punchless Mets 4-2 on Sunday night for a Subway Series sweep.

Chien-Ming Wang won for the first time in more than a year and Rivera got four outs, securing the Yankees' fifth consecutive victory - all away from home.

In a fun twist on a night that belonged to him, Rivera even contributed offensively by drawing a bases-loaded walk from Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth for his first career RBI. It was the third regular-season plate appearance for the 39-year-old closer - and second in five days.

Mark Teixeira hit a two-run double off Livan Hernandez (5-3) in a three-run first, when the Yankees had two of their four hits.

The injury-depleted Mets managed five, their best offensive output of the three-game series. The Yankees took five of six games from their crosstown rivals this season, handing the Mets their first sweep in 13 series at their new home, Citi Field.

Rivera entered with two on in the eighth and went to a full count on Omir Santos before throwing a called third strike. The right-hander pitched a one-hit ninth for his 18th save in 19 chances this season. He joined Milwaukee's Trevor Hoffman, who has 571 saves, as the only major leaguers with 500.

After the final out, Teixeira handed Rivera the game ball and the Yankees poured out of the dugout to hug him near first base. The Yankees (43-32) matched a season high at 11 games over .500.

Still struggling with his command, Wang (1-6) allowed four hits and three walks in a season-high 5 1-3 innings. He was pulled with a runner on second, but Phil Coke and Phil Hughes got the Yankees out of the sixth unscathed.

Hughes worked around a leadoff walk in a hitless seventh, and Brian Bruney started the eighth. He got two outs but walked two batters before manager Joe Girardi called on Rivera, whose first save came on May 17, 1996, against the California Angels. He got Garret Anderson to ground into a game-ending double play, closing out an 8-5 victory for Andy Pettitte and the Yankees.

Girardi and Derek Jeter each had two hits and an RBI in that game.

Following a season-ending foot injury last June, Wang has been unable to rediscover the form that made him a 19-game winner in 2006 and '07.

His previous win was June 15 last year in Houston, where he was injured while scoring on Jeter's single. The sinkerballer was 0-3 with a 34.50 ERA after three starts this season, then went on the disabled list for nearly a month with weakness in the adductor muscles in his hips.

After coming back, Wang made three relief appearances before returning to the rotation June 4 against Texas. His last three outings have shown gradual improvement.

The Mets cut it to 3-2 in the fourth. Prized prospect Fernando Martinez snapped an 0-for-16 slump with an RBI double and scored on Luis Castillo's two-out single.

It took three batters for the Yankees to grab the lead against Hernandez.

Back in the lineup after missing two games with flu symptoms, Jeter doubled off the left-field fence. Nick Swisher followed with a grounder to first and Daniel Murphy made a curious choice, trying to throw out Jeter at third. He beat the play, allowing Swisher to reach safely as well.

Teixeira sliced a two-run double into the left-field corner and later scored on Jorge Posada's sacrifice fly.

NOTES: It was Rivera's 18th regular-season save against the Mets. ... Johnny Damon did not start for the second consecutive game because of a flu bug that's been going around the Yankees' clubhouse.
