Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) – Be aware as you head out to do your shopping -- especially at the Carousel Center.

Crowded malls mean more opportunity for thieves, and they're already taking advantage of it – police, though, have the latest incident Caught On Tape.

Police say the victim was watching a movie at the mall’s theater; when it was finished, she got up and left, leaving her purse behind. By the time she realized she forgot it, someone else had walked away with it.

This isn't the first time it's happened; police say thieves have snatched purses from many others in the mall before.

“In the past, a woman's purse had been stolen, and they were able to get into her purse and take her keys -- and then they went around the parking lot, and were able to find her car,” says Syracuse police Sgt. Tom Connellan.

“We suggest, if you have a purse, just don't bring it in with you; just bring your wallet. But if you do bring your purse, just keep it somewhere where you know where it is.”

If you lose sign of it, your purse could be carried out on a shoulder other than yours.

If you recognize the two women Caught on Tape, call Syracuse police at 442-5222.

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - Police are investigating a pattern of robberies that have occurred since October 28 in vicinity of the shopping plaza on West Seneca Turnpike and Valley Drive in Syracuse.

So far, police have received information about three robberies:

First: Outside Dollar Tree, October 28, 9:45pm
Two victims -- a male and a female in their early 20s -- were robbed outside the store. Police are looking for two young black suspects -- one masked, one with a handgun; they had the victims lay on the ground as they ran off with the money the victims were carrying from store.

Second: Outside Luigi’s Pizza, November 5, 6:35pm
An older female victim was attacked, knocked down and dragged; the suspects stole her purse, ripping it off her shoulder. The purse’s contents were stolen, and then the purse was tossed outside a nearby home.

Third: Wednesday night, outside the liquor store in the plaza, 5:15pm
A 51-year-old woman, making her way from the store to the parking lot, was attacked and had her purse stolen. The force of the attack dislocated her shoulder. The purse was emptied and thrown out at a nearby home.

The last two incidents are believed to be connected. The suspects in last two incidents were not masked; they are two black males, both approximately 18-20 years old; one was wearing a dark hoodie, while another was wearing a tan jacket.

The recent string of attacks has police taking notice.

“We have not had many robberies in that area until now,” says Syracuse police Sgt. Tom Connellan. He says police are “trying to be proactive, getting information out to the public, so people are aware.”

Police are urging women to be extra vigilant. If you're making your way to one of these stores, don't carry a big purse, and if anyone comes up to you and tries to take something from you, give it up. This way you don't get hurt.

Police will also beef up patrols in the area.

If you have any information about any of these robberies, call Syracuse police at 442-5222.

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - A break in -- where barely anything was stolen or damaged -- has Upstate Medical University Police scratching their heads, and asking for your help.

Investigators say two people broke into the old Four Winds Psychiatric Center on South Salina Street September 18. The building was under construction at the time, and police say it looks like the suspects may have slipped in through the back door -- or a window in search of valuable metal.

“[Investigators] found out that there was a hard hat missing and there was a pool of water in the basement -- they saw some copper pipes that had been broken, so they think there's a possibility that they may have taken a small amount of copper,” says Upstate Medical University Police Lt. Tracy Collins.

Police are still interested in questioning the two. Anyone with information is asked to call the Upstate Medical University tip line at 464-4139.

Cicero, New York (WSYR-TV) - The man suspected of stealing meat from Wegmans by hiding it under his jacket has turned himself in to police.

Dan Elsworth, 43, of 1st North Street in Syracuse turned himself into Cicero Police around 8 a.m. Thursday.

Elsworth rode his bike to the police department, where officers arrested him and charged him with two counts of petit larceny.

He told police that he got a lot of calls from friends who saw him on NewsChannel 9.

He’s scheduled to be in court on December 30.

Cicero, New York (WSYR-TV) - Now that you've helped local police catch 47 fugitives and suspected criminals by being On The Lookout, Cicero police need your help.

A thief with a taste for expensive meat is on the loose, and his crimes were Caught On Tape.

Security cameras caught a man at the Cicero Wegmans store hiding tenderloin steaks in his Washington Redskins jacket. The man then left the store.

Cicero police say the suspected meat thief returned to the Wegmans two days later. A camera catches him in a different aisle, pulling off the same trick – and walking away with more expensive meat.

Security spotted him in the Wegmans on Taft Road too, and kept their cameras on him. While his actions drew suspicion, they didn't catch him stealing anything there.

“We only know of these three instances,” says Cicero police investigator Jim Meyers. “They all took place the same week. We do know, at the Taft Road Wegmans, he actually rides a bike from the store, so we assume he is local.

“These are petit larceny crimes, but it's important because they'll continue to happen. Hopefully your viewers will let us know who this man is, so we can put an end to it.”

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - Police say it's a growing problem, especially as the economy continues to falter. They're asking you to be On The Lookout for burglars hitting city businesses late at night -- making off with all kinds of merchandise.

Since October 1, burglars have struck city businesses 36 times. Many of the break-ins are concentrated in the 900 to 1000 block of South Geddes Street and the commercial stretch of South Salina Street near Seneca Turnpike.

The break-ins are hitting businesses hard.

A surveillance camera catches a burglar in action, grabbing lots of lottery tickets at Sabatino’s Pizza & Deli on South Geddes Street -- chances are to sell those tickets on the street.

Another burglar is shown going right for the register at the Subway restaurant.

They're not breaking in using any sophisticated tools; sometimes, they'll use what's around them. In one case, the thief uses a rock, breaking the glass in the side door. In a matter of seconds, he's in.

These Caught On Tape burglars have all struck within the past month. There have been others.

“People are smashing windows, getting in and seeing what they can get as quickly as possible, they're getting in and out,” says Syracuse police Sgt. Tom Connellan.

Syracuse police need you to be On The Lookout for people lurking around businesses late at night, and selling a lot of merchandise during the day.

Connellan says if you see anyone selling “sneakers or jeans or any type of clothing for a cheap amount of money, he probably got that illegally and we would really like that information -- that could lead us to the people responsible for these burglaries.”

The Sabatino's thief is a light-skinned, possibly Hispanic male, and appears to be somewhere between 35-40 years old, and is 5' 5" tall, weighing 170-180 pounds. He was seen that night wearing a green hooded coat with a fur collar, blue jeans will rolled pant cuffs, knit cap and white hooded sweatshirt.

If you have any information that could help Syracuse police track down the suspects, call them at 442-5222. All calls will remain confidential.

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - The parking lot of the Wegman's store on Pond Street in Syracuse was busy. It was still daylight. But that didn't stop a thief from knocking down an elderly woman to get her purse.

Syracuse police are On The Lookout and asking for your help on this case. While the purse snatcher may have gotten away from a Good Samaritan, he couldn't duck the store surveillance cameras.

The man police are hoping to catch is about six feet tall, 160 pounds with dark hair. He’s Caught on Tape, seen with a woman, walking out of Wegmans just before the parking lot purse snatching.

The 75-year-old victim had just finished grocery shopping. She was heading to her car in the handicapped space, and was getting ready to unlock her car door, when the thief came from behind and knocked her to the ground.

“Just as I was about to get into my car, I heard a lady start screaming, someone grabbed her purse and I looked up and saw him running down the parking lot,” says Good Samaritan Phillip Raymond.

Raymond saw him, and chased after him -- first in his car, then on foot.

“I was screaming at him, ‘Give me the purse.’ He ended up throwing a garbage can at me and a soda can, and then he threw the purse, but took her wallet,” Raymond says.

Raymond didn't give up the chase, and caught up with the man again. “That's when I threw him to the ground and told him to give me the wallet. I got the wallet and he took off.”

“We're confident these two people are probably locals from the neighborhood,” says Syracuse police Sgt. Tom Connellan. “These are the worst kind of people -- these are the kind of people that prey on the elderly and the weak, and these are the kind of guys we really want to catch.”

Raymond didn't hesitate to come to the victim's aid; now it's your chance to step up and help police get this guy off the streets.

The victim was very appreciative of Raymond's actions, but police want to remind everyone it's best to be a good witness and leave the chasing for police.

If you know who the suspect is, or if you know the woman who was with him, call Syracuse police at 442-5222.

Cortland, New York (WSYR-TV) - Cortland police are asking your help in finding the person they say took a benefit collection can off a store counter early Wednesday morning.

Workers at the Mobil on Clinton Street, near the I-81 exit, were taking donations to help with medical costs for a friend paralyzed in a car crash this summer. A store manager says the theft is all caught on tape.

Cortland police say just before 1:00 a.m. a man came into the gas station and took the collection can intended for Matt Halfway. No one at the store realized it was gone until later Wednesday morning.

"I figured his parents might have come in to collect it, found out his parents came in later on wanting to know where it was,” says store manager Joseph Burlingame. “I had no explanation. I felt so bad, I viewed the video camera and I saw a kid in his 20s take it."

The benefit bucket for Matt was sitting on the counter, and the suspect is seen on camera casually sliding the can off the counter, quickly tucking it under his arm and walking away.

"I just can't believe that someone would actually do something like that, that was for a good cause, why would you want to take it from him it's just devastating that someone would think about taking it."

They say Matt, who used to work next door at the Jiffy Lube, is facing a tough road, now rehabbing in Schenectady but scheduled to be moved to Kingston in a couple weeks for treatment.

As for the suspect, he may have made off with the money, but he couldn't stay out of sight of the many security cameras here, and friends are hoping he won't get very far now that he's Caught On Tape.

If you recognize the man or the woman caught on tape at the Mobil on Clinton Street in Cortland, give Cortland police a call at 607-753-3001.
