Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - One day after his photos were aired on NewsChannel 9, a suspect Caught on Tape is in police custody.

Syracuse police have arrested Sonny Rizzo, 24, of Syracuse, in connection with the theft of a wallet from an unattended shopping cart in Sam’s Club in East Syracuse in late June.

Police say Rizzo used a credit card from that wallet to make several purchases at stores in the Syracuse area. He is charged with forgery, identity theft and criminal possession of stolen property.

Police say Rizzo’s mother turned him in, and he later confessed to the crime.

In addition to Rizzo, 25-year-old Timothy Jones of Seymour Street has also been arrested and charged with forgery, identity theft and grand larceny; police say Jones, who works at that Sam’s Club, was the one who took the card.

Jones has also confessed to police.

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Police are pretty sure they will catch a thief -- as long as enough people get a look at the suspect. He was Caught on Tape not once, but twice.

Store cameras got a good look at the man investigators say went on a shopping spree with a stolen credit card.

Syracuse police say it all started when the victim left his wallet unattended in a shopping cart, and soon after it was stolen.

Sgt. Tom Connellan says the crime happened last Tuesday at the Sam’s Club on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt.

A credit card from that wallet was then put to use that afternoon and evening in stores all over Syracuse.

“We discovered that the card had been used five times between 3:00 in the afternoon and 8:00 at night,” Connellan says.

Cameras spotted the suspect making purchases at Granby's Market on Westcott Street. Just 15 minutes later, the suspect used that card again at the Mobil Mart on Nottingham Road, and again, he was Caught on Tape.

In all, about $1,000 in purchases were made, from Nottingham Road to a Geddes Street clothing store, to a north side market on Butternut Street. None of the clerks asked for a second form of ID, and that's where police say you can help yourself:

“What we suggest is that you try to maybe write on your credit card, ‘see id’, so that when the clerks do get the card, and they try to compare the signature, that person has to provide some identification, maybe with a picture, so they know it's the right person using the card,” Connellan says.

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse police are ‘On the Lookout’ for three people who took advantage of a man who lost his wallet. Police believe the three probably travel together as a group.

By the time they traveled together through the store and made a stop at the register, their grocery cart was full. Police say they racked up a $250 dollar bill at Price Chopper and made other shopping trips.

Charges totaled $1,000 on that stolen credit card, with no questions asked at any of the registers. “No one ever checks to look at signatures, no one really checks IDs, and they should be doing that,” said Sgt. Tom Connellan with the Syracuse Police Department.

Police recommend you write "Check ID" on the back of your credit card. “This way when the clerk sees the credit card, they have to ask for your id, people don't mind showing the pictures,” Connellan said.

If you can help, call Syracuse Police at 442-5222.

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - Elizabeth Maeweather is happy to report that three of five elephant statues that were stolen from her front yard have been returned.

Maeweather spoke to us on Friday after the five good-luck statues were stolen from her property.

Whoever took the statues put three of them on Maeweather's neighbor's front yard Monday.

Maeweather says she's hopeful that the thief or thieves will bring the other two back as well.

If you have any information on the stolen elephants, call Syracuse Police at 442-5222.

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - They didn't steal her car or her jewels. Instead, thieves took something more precious from a Syracuse woman's front porch -- her prized yard ornaments.

It's a bizarre theft that now has police On The Lookout for the statues, worth about $1,000.

Elizabeth Maeweather's love for elephant ornaments first started twenty years ago, when a friend told her they were good luck.

Maeweather says her friend told her “elephants are good luck if their trunks are up, so every time I went somewhere, I just started buying them.”

But Maeweather's luck ran out this past weekend, when her five treasured elephant statues were stolen from her Glenwood Avenue yard Saturday.

Maeweather says one of the statues weighed well over 100 pounds, and it was never moved because she says it was too heavy to move.

That’s led Maeweather to believe the theft job took a lot of time and effort. She thought surely someone must have seen something, but her neighbors -- and even the mailman -- said they saw nothing; the elephants just simply vanished.

“I don't know if it’s because of the recession or what's going on. Somebody needed some money, or somebody's decorating their own yard,” Maeweather says.

She now plans to install a $1,300 security system on her front porch. She says the added cost is worth her peace of mind.

“I don't feel that somebody should dictate, by taking something from me, what I can and can not have outside my house,” says Maeweather.

Elizabeth Maeweather marked her initials underneath the statues. Anyone who spots the initials or knows anything about this robbery is asked to contact Syracuse police at 442-5222.

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - His name may sound familiar to folks for several reasons. LaTray spent 18 years in federal prison; he got out in June 2007. He's wanted again, this time for violating his federal supervised release.

When LaTray got out of prison, he got a job at the Franciscan Ministries on Syracuse's north side, and worked as a maintenance supervisor.

They say it's too bad LaTray has gotten into trouble again, because they say while he was here, he was doing a lot of good. “LaTray seemed to be doing well. Probation reports he was keeping up with everything until the last few months. He seemed to increase his narcotics use and as of May, he hasn't been heard from,” said Joe Ciciarelli from the Fugitive Task Force.

If you've heard from LaTray, who is 6’ tall and weighs 155 pounds, the fugitive task force would like to hear from you.

He was living on Syracuse’s north side; LaTray may be living in Northern Onondaga County. The number to call is 473-7625.

It triggered an alarm to the nearby State Police barracks.

Investigator James Hunt says the video shows two young men, clearly in the entrance to the gift shop. “They're the only ones in that area at the time the alarm went off.
