Recap: Rice vs. Houston
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Darian Thibodeaux knocked down a pair of free throws in the final seconds to push Houston to a narrow 76-75 win over Rice in a Conference USA battle at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Thibodeaux scored a game-high 21 points for the Cougars (15-14, 7-9 C-USA) as they won their third straight game to close out the regular season. Alandise Harris accounted for 16 points and seven rebounds, followed by Jonathon Simmons with 12 points and eight assists in the victory.
The Owls (17-14, 8-8) were paced by Arsalan Kazemi with 19 points, Lucas Kuipers 12 and Omar Oraby 11 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots off the bench as the squad suffered a second loss in the last three outings.
Both teams shot just over 44 percent from the floor in the first half, but it was an 8-2 advantage at the free-throw line that afforded the Cougars a 39-34 advantage at the break.
In the second half Houston built a lead as great as 13 points, but Rice converted a sizzling 65.0 percent from the field in order to stay close and eventually take the lead before Thibodeaux handed the win to the visitors.
In a game that experienced six ties and 10 lead changes, the Owls bowed despite shooting 51.9 percent from the floor on the night.Game Notes
