Recap: Fla Atlantic vs. Arkansas State
Hot Springs, AR (Sports Network) - Marcus Hooten finished with 23 points as the Arkansas State Red Wolves defeated the Florida Atlantic Owls, 70-55, in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Convention Center Court.
Malcoln Kirkland added 15 points for the ninth-seeded Red Wolves (13-19), while Brandon Peterson scored 13 and Trey Finn finished with 12 points.
Dennis Mavin led the eighth-seeded Owls (11-19) with 12 points, while Shavar Richardson chipped in 11 points.
ASU shot 42.9 percent from the field to start the game, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. FAU made only 33.3 percent, including 3-of-9 from beyond the arc, as the Red Wolves took a 36-27 lead into halftime.
In the second half the Owls continued to struggle, hitting only 36.7 percent from the field, while the Red Wolves were slightly better at 38.1 percent. ASU did outscore FAU 18-4 on the free-throw line, as the visitors built their advantage. The Red Wolves scored the first four points of the second, giving them a double-digit lead they would never relinquish, pushing ahead by as many as 19 en route to the victory.
The Red Wolves outscored the Owls in the paint, 26-20. ASU also had a 41-34 advantage on the boards.
The Red Wolves now move on to play top seed Middle Tennessee on Sunday in the quarterfinals.Game Notes
