Recap: Nevada vs. Louisiana Tech
Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Trevor Gaskins scored 21 points and sunk a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds to lead the fifth-seeded Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to the upset victory over the top-seed Nevada Wolfpack in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Orleans Arena.
Raheem Appleby had 17 points and Romario Souza added 16 for Louisiana Tech (18-15) which will face second-seeded New Mexico State in the conference title game on Saturday.
Malik Story scored 21 points while Olek Czyz had 18 points and eight rebounds for Nevada (26-6). Darion Hunt posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Jerry Evans Jr. chipped in 10 points as well for the Wolfpack.
Both teams got off to fast starts with Louisiana Tech shooting at a 66.7 percent clip including a scalding 8-for-10 from three point range in the first half while Nevada was just behind at 56.0 percent including 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs advantage helped them build a 42-39 halftime lead.
Both teams cooled off in the second half with Louisiana Tech at 40.0 percent which was better than Nevada's 31.6 percent. Despite the second half shooting trouble the Wolfpack stayed in the game and tied the score 71-71 with 2:27 left. The Bulldogs then went on a 5-0 spurt to lead 76-71 with 29 seconds remaining. Evans Jr. cut the lead to three, 76-73, on the Wolfpack's next possession. Gaskins was then fouled and calmly hit a pair of free throws to put the game out of reach.
Nevada lost despite bringing down 19 offensive rebounds and outscoring Louisiana Tech 17-2 on second chance points. The game featured seven ties and 12 lead changes.Game Notes
