Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim told ESPN on Monday that he's hopeful James Southerland will return to the team.

Boeheim said he felt bad for the senior forward, who spent the Orange’s Saturday home game against Villanova on the bench in street clothes.

Saturday morning, the school’s athletics department announced that Southerland would be unable to compete with the team indefinitely.

They said he was out due to an eligibility issue.

Southerland was among the team’s top scorers with 13.6 points per game.

SU defeated the Wildcats 72-61 on Saturday.
