Syracuse (WSYR-TV/AP) – Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim further cemented his legacy as a legend among college hoops coaches during Wednesday's Big East opener against Rutgers at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse won the game 78-53. Jim Boeheim notched his 903rd career victory, breaking a tie with Bob Knight for second all-time among Division I men's coaches.
Boeheim, in his 37th season at his alma mater, trails only Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, who has 940 victories.
Knight has 902 wins in his career, including three national championships while coaching at Indiana University. One of those national championships included a 1987 victory over the Orange in the NCAA Tournament final when Keith Smart hit a last-second jumpshot to give the Hoosiers a 74-73 victory.
Boeheim is already in elite company. The SU coach, Knight, and Duke University coach Mike Krzyzewski are the only coaches in NCAA basketball history with more than
900 wins.
SU is ranked No. 7 in both major polls.
The Orange has now won three games in a row since a disappointing loss to Temple at Madison Square Garden.
Brandon Triche led SU Wednesday night with a season-high 25 points, hitting 5 of 7 3-point attempts, and added six assists to lead Syracuse. Michael Carter-Williams finished with 12 points and 10 assists, his eighth double-double, and C.J. Fair had 15 points and three blocks.
