SU survives late Pitt rally to advance in Big East Tournament

New York (WSYR-TV) – The Syracuse University men’s basketball team weathered a furious rally by Pittsburgh to win 62-59 and advance to the semifinal round of the Big East Conference tournament at Madison Square Garden.

No. 5 seed SU went into the halftime intermission enjoying a 40-27 lead, but had to hold on in the final minutes to escape with the win over the fourth seeded Panthers.

The Orange will now face arch-rival Georgetown in the semifinal round. The Hoyas advanced with a 62-43 win over Cincinnati.

Georgetown has beaten SU in both of their regular season meetings, including the campaign’s finale.

In the win over Pittsburgh, James Southerland paced the Orange again with 20 points, including going 6-for-6 on 3-point shooting.

CJ Fair scored 13, while Brandon Triche had 12.

Lamar Patterson led Pittsburgh’s balanced attack with 14 points.
