Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The Orange may have a bit of confidence coming off of last Friday’s win, especially when you consider this week’s opponent – Rutgers – is a lot like Pittsburgh.
The Scarlet Knights are known as a physical team that plays solid defense and loves to run the ball. So, in that regard, the game plan will be pretty similar to what we saw at the Dome against the Panthers last week.
Priority number one for the Orange will be to stop Rutgers’ running back Jawan Jamison. Jamison leads the Big East in rushing yards, averaging more than 120 per game.
As a result, the Scarlet Knights are tops in the conference in terms of time of possession, which creates less scoring opportunities for their opponents.
SU head coach Doug Marrone knows the best way to beat Rutgers is to stop Jamison in his tracks, which he says is easier said than done.
The coach also addressed some of the injuries that the team is dealing with. Senior Safety Shamarko Thomas left last Friday’s game following a scary helmet-to-helmet collision. According to Marrone, Shamarko has been cleared to return to practice on a limited basis. Marrone believes he’ll be fully cleared in time for kickoff.
