says after weeks of not throwing and attempting to rehabilitate without surgery, Harvey has changed course and opted for surgery.
Harvey has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow and was hoping rest would allow it to heal before next season.
The surgery means that Harvey will certainly be out all of the 2014 season with an eye on returning back to the top of the Mets rotation in 2015.
The 24-year-old Harvey is the starting pitcher for the 2013 National League All-Star team and finished the year with a record of 9-5, 191 strikeouts and a 2.27 ERA
