Cortland (WSYR-TV) – The New York Jets have arrived in Central New York.
The Jets’ will have their first full practice on the SUNY Cortland campus on Friday; it will be closed to the public, however.
The first open practice will be held on Saturday, July 28. The team anticipates tens-of-thousands of fans will attend the practice.
The Jets have been traveling to Cortland for training camp since 2009. Last year, a labor dispute kept the Jets from having training camp at the college.
The college estimates Jets training camp boosted the local economy by $5.8 million in 2010. That same year, more than 50 SUNY Cortland students worked at the training camp as interns.
"How big a deal is this for our town? It's huge" said Lori Megivern, who helped prepare the Jets' welcome by painting a sign saying "Welcome to Cortland Jets" on the off-ramp of I-81.
"It's nothing but smiles here, and it's everyone working for a common good," she added.
A schedule of SUNY Cortland events, including Jets' activities, can be found at the
school's website.
