Oneida Nation (WSYR-TV) – On the cusp of the NFL season, the Oneida Indian Nation is launching a campaign asking the Washington Redskins to formally change their nickname.
The Oneidas noted that the word “Redskins” has traditionally been used as a slur against Native Americans.
The Oneidas are targeting the Washington, DC, market with their ads, which call into question the NFL’s stated commitment to inclusion.
After the radio spot airs in the Washington market for the season opener, the Oneidas say it will be broadcast in markets that host the team also. A radio ad is already available on a website dedicated to the campaign
After Cooperstown High School changed its nickname from “Redskins” to “Hawkeyes,” the Oneidas donated money to help the school purchase new equipment.
