Our seemingly endless winter will continue here in central New York for the foreseeable future. In the big picture, there is a storm system centered in eastern Canada. This system is in no hurry to move as a blocking area of high pressure is situated to the north over the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere.
While low pressure may be in eastern Canada, its influence expands out well from the center back to the west. Weaker, smaller scale systems will rotate around this main storm, thus enhancing snow shower chances for all of Central New York. One such disturbance should impact the region tonight. .
We still expect that winds will turn into the northwest in the wake of tonight’s disturbance. Consequently, lake effect snow showers will re-develop and affect areas farther south than earlier in the week. Collectively, most of CNY southeast of Lake Ontario will receive accumulating snow later tonight and tomorrow, though mainly during the morning hours tomorrow. In fact, Lake Snow Advisories have been hoisted for tonight and tomorrow for the counties southeast of Lake Ontario, including Onondaga County. In the most persistent snows, 2-6” can be expected by midday Friday.
By the weekend, our eastern Canadian storm will finally begin to loosen its grip on us and move out into the Atlantic Ocean, though not before one last trough of low pressure potentially moves through during the first half of Saturday. Eventually, we should dry out for Saturday afternoon and Sunday but don’t expect a big warm up. In fact, there our signs our temperatures will remain below normal right into next week.
We continue to watch a storm system that will head east toward the mid Atlantic states early next week. The computer models have gone back and forth over the last few days as to the movement of the storm but as of now (late Thursday) the storm should track just far enough south to keep any steady precipitation out of central New York but it is admittedly a close call. We are sticking with a forecast of cloudy weather Monday with snow as far north as the New York/Pennsylvania border. We’ll keep you posted if there are any changes to this part of the forecast.
Whatever happens Monday, the overall pattern remains locked in through the remainder of next week which will mean a continuation of the cooler than normal weather for us with more in the way of snow showers.
