After a mostly clear On the midday weather map, an area of low pressure was located north of the border and will track east into the St. Lawrence Valley later today. Attached to this low is a cold front that extends south into the Great Lakes. This system will continue to impact us through the rest of today.
We expect periods of snow through the afternoon. As we warm further into the 30s and the cold front gets closer, there could be a few bursts of heavier snow much like the last couple of days. However, with temperatures above freezing it is going to be tough to accumulate any snow on roads the rest of the day. There could be a coating to an inch on grassy surfaces. Over the Tug Hill there could be a bit more snow today.
Even though today will technically be warmer than yesterday, blustery southwest winds at 15- 25 mph will keep it feeling like it is in the mid 20s. Winds will diminish and become west by this evening, changing to north tonight.
For the weekend drier air moves into the area, but we will continue to have cloud cover through Saturday with a small chance for light snow Sunday morning. During the afternoon Sunday, high pressure will put an end to any snow and even provide for some peeks of sun. However, temperatures won’t recover much as a cold northwest flow persists over New York, which will keep this weekend’s high temperatures in the mid 30s. Normally for this time of year, the highs should be in the low 40s.
The next system that we are keeping an eye on is another area of low pressure that will trek across the northern United States towards us for the start of next week. This means we could see another mix of rain and snow Monday and Tuesday with high temperatures nearing 40. Unfortunately, once the system passes we should remain cold for the rest of the week. However, it is still early and the details may change, so check back as we approach next week.
