Thursday Morning September 2, 2010

Today will be like the past couple of days in central New York with heat and humidity.  In fact, today should mark the third straight day of 90°+ weather, thus officially making it a heat wave.  Unlike the past few days, we think there is a small chance for an isolated afternoon thunderstorm.

An increased threat of scattered showers and thunderstorms will be with us later tomorrow as a strong cold front approaches the region from the west.  Before the threat for showers and thunderstorms arrive, we may hit 90 for a fourth straight day…or at least come pretty darn close.

Behind tomorrow’s cold front, sharply cooler air will arrive Saturday on the heels of strong and gusty west to northwest winds.  As the relatively chilly air moves over Lake Erie and Ontario, lake effect rain showers will likely develop on Saturday and affect parts of the region.  Right now, the best day of the Labor Day weekend looks to be Labor Day itself as we are expecting dry weather and pleasant temperatures.

We also continue to keep a sharp weather eye on Hurricane Earl, which is a major hurricane, category 3 or higher.  Overnight Earl increased strength with top sustained winds of 145 mph, a solid category 4 hurricane (maximum sustained winds between 131 and 155 mph).  Earl is forecast to move north and northeast along the East Coast over the next 24-48 hours.  This has prompted various watches and warning from New England to North Carolina.
